I think The Birdcage was one of the first mainstream movies that proved that you could make a queer movie about queer characters that did not stereotype them or punch down at them and have that movie be popular
it was number 1 at the box office for a few weeks

like it was still a comedy so it was easier for "regular" audiences to get into, but it's still... something.
